What a great privilege it is to be an artist. What we make has the ability to inspire people, elevate their senses, and turn their eyes to the heavens.
Another motion project complete. The Challenge of this project was to use motion to show a dialogue without using sound. The absence of sound allows for the visual effects, timing/pacing, staging, and choreography to tell the story instead of relying on spoken word. I used an excerpted version of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello’s “Who’s on First” comedy routine as the dialogue because I was inspired by the constant back and forth banter as well as the wide range of emotions displayed by both characters. I explored ways to visualize each character’s voice and used pacing as a tool to magnify areas of heated debate and emotion.
This time based piece visualizes the essence of rhythm. Using the first movement of Karl Jenkins’ Palladio, I explored ways to convey the mood of the music, the identity of different instruments, and the relationship of all the parts to the whole composition. Rhythm is the unifying force that ties the piece together visually and musically. It creates recognizable patterns which allowed me to explore visual variations and how they can enhance or challenge the meaning of the music.
Blog post from Evolve EA, a Pittsburgh based design firm specializing in sustainable and environmental design. The article details my recent meeting with Evolve EA and some of my design work that I had the privilege of presenting along with fellow CMU students Erica Stine and Zari Salimnejad. The article also provides a nice review of our senior show which was skillfully designed and directed by Tommy Browne and Lauren Cicozi.
As a part of my work for the Carnegie Mellon University Press I recently designed the cover for “Spitshine,” the first collection of published poetry by Anne Marie Rooney. More details about the book can be found online here: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/spitshine-anne-marie-rooney/1107694349
The School of Design presents its third student lecture series this Friday. Junior Industrial and Communication Design students will talk about their experiences abroad this past fall. All are welcome. Poster design by me.
Today I had the pleasure of sharing some of my recent work with Evolve a Pittsburgh based company specializing in sustainable design. Evolve is a multidisciplinary studio that has completed projects that run the gamut of design disciplines and forms. I presented the work that I recently completed for our Senior Lab, a prototype for a proposal of an interactive web database that presents information to the audience of first time home buyers in Southwestern Pennsylvania. This video is a basic prototype of how users would interact with the website.
Southwestern PA is frequently ranked as one of the “most livable” regions in the United States. However, due to its history of steel production and industrial manufacturing many of the neighborhoods throughout the region are heavily polluted. In many cases, neighborhoods have reported a high frequency of lung cancer and respiratory diseases. These cases may be linked to high levels of hazardous pollutants in the air.
This proposed online database would display information about the hazardous pollutants that are present in each neighborhood and the possible health effects of exposure to these pollutants. Specific neighborhoods are tagged as “recommended” because of their low health risks and lack of pollutants. Others are noted as “hazardous” due to the effects of pollution that are still present in the air. The goal of this database is to educate home buyers and raise awareness of the environmental benefits/risks of different neighborhoods. By interacting with this website, users are able to make more informed decisions that may enhance their health and overall well being.
Meeting with the team from Evolve was a wonderful opportunity for discussion and sharing of ideas.
